The Thing Week: Fan Made Posters

It’s undeniable that all horror fans (at least I think so) know what The Thing’s poster looks like, even if you’re not a huge horror fan and have never watched it, it’s impossible to say that you’ve never seen it. For today, I decided showcase some of the awesome posters from The Thing… but they’re not your typical run-of-the-mill “official” poster, no, these are some amazing fan made posters that I found. It just goes to show you that a film that’s 25+ years old is still going strong in the minds of so many people. There are way more than the ones that I have here but these were some of my personal favorite, if you want to see more you can scroll through Deviant Art for some great posters that didn’t make the post.

This retro 50's style poster is one of my favorite of all the ones that use this polygonal type of design. This poster was created by Travis Pitts who has done a lot of these style posters.

Created by Strong Stuff on Deviant Art, Strong Stuff explains his love for The Thing: "i love the sense of dread and uncertainty that the film delivers, even upon repeat viewings. and there's just something to be said about action/horror ensemble casts from the 80's...from "the thing" to "aliens" to "predator", it just seems like filmmakers knew how to flesh out supporting characters well enough to make you genuinely care about them. seems kinda like a lost art to me."

These two posters were created by the Fro Design Co. They definitely have a pseudo 80's/70's vibe about them, with my personal favorite being the first one of the two.

Another Deviant Art submission. This poster was created by Small Town Hero and resembles what would be a great modernized version of the poster, if not… it looks like the type of poster what would be on The Thing's DVD box had it been released this decade. Small Town Hero explains, "I wanted this poster to have macready and 'the thing' creature on it, along with really dark blue colors and a flare on the snow behind, to let off that really cool red color."

These posters are another Deviant Art find. Created by elsantownage. They're a loving throw back to non-hand-drawn posters of the 80's. The top resembles an actual theatrical poster from the film whereas the bottom resembles the cover of the film's novelization.

Created by 3-D Monster, he explains, "The title is "The Thing",based on the John Carpenter 1982 classic. I wanted to remake the original poster in a more minimalistic style featuring the alien blood as it tries to squirm away. I really wanted to try & capture that moment of sheer terror."

Created by Thom Wulf on Deviant Art. This poster also has that polygonal design to it and works well as a fan-made teaser poster. The serious look MacReady has on his face accompanied by the opened mouth of razor sharp teeth behind him.

Vincent Price Tribute Poster

Not many people know about graphic designer and media enthusiast Eric Slager but he’s 22 years old and he created one hell of a Vincent Price tribute poster. I saw that many of my other blogger friends did a post showcasing his tribute and before I even had a chance to come up with mine, Slager himself contacted me. He asked if I would be so kind into doing a post on his poster. Well… I did.

The poster itself is very gritty and it’s designed to look like an old late 50s or early-mid 60s poster; having all of the titles of the movies Price has been in compose his face. The mustache and hair are the only solid black aspects of Price’s faces. I quite enjoy it and I find it to be a very modern tribute to a great actor. Below is an image of the poster and if you click on it, it should blow up.

Jeepers Creepers It's Not Football

This is probably going to be one of the most random posts I ever write up but hey… it’s something that I have always remembered because of how stupid I was. I remember when Jeepers Creepers came out because the poster for it caught my eye immediately when I walked past it. The raw slanted lettering that spells out the title of the movie made me want to take a pencil and draw out the entire poster by hand. The way that creepy, angry, almost dead looking eyes peers right at you. It made me want to see that movie but the fact was, I was too young still… so I had to see it once it came out on DVD. But, you want to know something really crazy? As I stood there staring at the poster I actually thought that Jeepers Creepers was a horror movie about football. Hard to believe but let me explain why…

The poster shows an eye peering out through a hole in something. This ‘something’ has stitching right down the middle, sort of like a shoelace or something, and whatever that something is it looks leathery. I came to the conclusion that it had to be a football. Perhaps not a modern day one but rather an old one from the 1920s or something and that made me think that it was a period piece. Now, since I thought it was a football I figured that the eye belonged to some sort of monster, or genie or demon that lived inside this football for years until it was released. Again, that doesn’t make sense because if this was a period piece, how could it be living inside a football for hundreds of years if football was invented in the 1900s. I never really figured out why they chose the name Jeepers Creepers but I figured it had to do something with the song.

At the age of 11 or 10, my imagination was wild and I could see something in a piece of bread that wasn’t really there but I would be convinced of it. I saw a football and a genie in the poster for Jeepers Creepers and as hard as I try to look at that poster now, I just can’t see it anymore. Perhaps it’s age or perhaps I lost my childhood imagination but one thing is for certain… I am glad that this movie wasn’t about football.

Movie Posters: Devil (2010)

I haven’t done this in a while but I figure I should return to something I used to do back when I first started my blog and that is comment on upcoming horror movie posters. With M. Night Shyamalan producing an upcoming horror film Devil, I’ve decided to look at the film’s two awesome teaser posters. I’m not really sure why I am drawn to these posters but I think it has something to do with how they utilized elevator features to make them appear more demonic. Also, I was the first partner of my friend’s production company called Dos Diablos Productions so I guess it’s fitting. Just looking at the posters makes me see how unique they are so I can only hope that the movie is as good as the posters.

Poster Postcards: The Thing

I’ve seen so many blogs do something like this so I figure that I would to. As many of you know The Thing is my absolute favorite horror movie of all time and it wasn’t until recently when I decided to look up posters for the movie. Well, below are some of the ones that I came across and my interpretation of a few of them.

So I present to you the first Poster Postcards from The Paradise of Horror:

This is the poster most of us know. It’s the theatrical poster that’s used on the Special Edition version of The Thing. This poster always used to hypnotize me because I would stare it wondering what was underneath that hood? What kind of thing could take the form of a human being? Even in the library I would walk past the VHS of this and I would stare at that imposing cover art. Who would have known that it would be my favorite horror movie of all time?


I really like this poster a lot. It really monsterizes The Thing as some kind of epic, unstoppable force that comes from below. The terrain is barren, white and bleak and it just looks more frightening.




Right now, and this just came up, this is my favorite poster for this movie. The bottom of the poster depicts the outpost in flames, showing a grim and grisly future that awaits those who are inside. It truly is like looking into the future. Atop the burning outpost is a grotesque figure of twisted, bloody skin that represents the faceless thing. What I really like about this poster that the first one doesn’t have is the isolation; this poster replicates that isolationism that’s in the movie.
